Cancelling cable is easy. Cancelling it without regret takes ten minutes of preparation.
- Write down what you actually watch. Sports, local news, kids, a few series? Your list decides your setup.
- Check your internet speed. About 10 Mbps per HD stream and 25 Mbps per 4K stream. See the speed guide.
- Ask your ISP for internet-only pricing. Bundle discounts often vanish when TV leaves, so know the new internet price before you cancel.
- List your screens. Every TV needs a streaming device (a Fire TV Stick, Google TV or Apple TV). Roku owners: read our Roku guide.
- Run a free trial alongside cable. Request one and keep cable for a week while you test live sports at peak time.
- Test your worst-case moment. Game night, 8 PM, everyone home, all screens on.
- Plan your DVR habits. Catch-up and on-demand replace most DVR use; check the channels you record.
- Return equipment. Boxes and DVRs are usually rented. Return them and keep the receipt.
- Cancel by phone and get confirmation. Ask for the cancellation in writing or an email.
- Keep a fallback for a month. If you can, keep a cheap month-to-month option until you are sure.
